Uke Ohana

Pu’u O Hoku Ranch & Halawa Valley, Molokai, Hawaii

ACTIVITIES

Come fall in love….with your ukulele…with Molokai!

Your mornings will be spent playing Old Style Hawaiian ukulele music and learning music theory. Your afternoons will be filled with playing songs at the locations they were written about. We will also be learning the music and dance of hula and experiencing Aloha culture with members of the Molokai community.  Finally your evenings will be filled with music shared under the stars with the legends of Molokai.

Throughout your time at Pu’ u O Hoku you will learn chords, strums, slides and perform them… Write your own songs , really “hear” your ukulele &  feel the spirit of “Ohana”.  This workshop is all about you falling in love with your Ukulele and the music you make together!

Featuring:

Mo’olelo- Storytelling and Ukulele. You will hear Lono teaching true Hawaiian ukulele traditions and music with stories of Molokai’s past from 600 AD, to the present. You will have a intimate embrace with the vibrant community of Molokai; from the Na Mele O Kapunas at Hotel Molokai Aloha Fridays, to the beautiful ancient valley of Halawa with its taro fields and flowers, and the old style Hawaiian hospitality, biodynamic cuisine and aestheic of Pu’u O Hoku Ranch.

“Hui O Mele Nei” Lono and his friends will give an ancient presentation of traditional Molokai hula that is made up of 3 dances and their stories. Daily they will enhance our  will experience of Hawaiian history, language, culture and hula while learning with our Ukulele the songs of Molokai.

A word from Lono: “Your ukulele embrace will teach you Old Style Hawaiian music and lifestyle. The people and culture of Molokai will empower you to become personally involved with your ukulele music. The music and landscape will inspire  you to create your own Old Style  songs with your ukulele.”

NOTE: After registration an information packet will be sent to you. It will include a booklet of traditional Molokai songs, with chords, from the Kupunas Friday night songbook and contemporary songs written by Lono.  You can begin practicing and be able to join the Kupunas and play along on May 23, 2014  at Hotel Molokai.
